A Technical Overview
The VIX, or CBOE Volatility Index, is a widely monitored benchmark that tracks market expectations of 30-day volatility in the S&P 500 Index. Introduced by the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) in 1993, the VIX is commonly referred to as the “fear gauge” due to its ability to quantify anticipated market risk and sentiment. Historically, the VIX exhibits a strong inverse correlation with the S&P 500, meaning periods of rising VIX typically align with declining equity prices, while a lower VIX indicates market stability and often coincides with S&P 500 rallies.
In the chart below, vertical yellow lines mark recent VIX peaks that align with corresponding S&P 500 troughs. As the VIX retreats to lower levels, rebounds in the S&P 500 frequently follow. These opposing dynamics offer valuable context for identifying potential inflection points, helping investors refine market entry and exit timing.
Recently, a notable order surfaced involving an eight‑figure purchase of out-of-the-money VIX call options. The trade was executed above the asking price, signaling urgency and conviction behind the position. With a short-dated expiration, this move implies expectations for a near-term spike in volatility. Should that occur, it would likely correspond with rising risk aversion and a potential short-term sell-off in equities.
Notably, the fractal pattern I introduced in January 2024—which has consistently mapped major VIX spikes, including the surge observed in mid‑October—remains intact. If the pattern continues to hold, it suggests another volatility flare-up may be imminent, aligning closely with the timing of this substantial VIX call accumulation.
